Trend Micro Cloud App Security Report 2019

Trend Micro today published its Cloud App Security Report 2019. Cloud App Security detected and blocked 12.7 million high-risk threats that passed through the built-in security of cloud-based email services. Trend provides an in-depth report on the notable trends and stories from 2019 to help organizations prepare.

The Trend MicroTM Smart Protection NetworkTM infrastructure blocked over 47 billion email threats in 2019, an increase of 14% from the previous year. The Trend Micro Cloud App SecurityTM solution, an API-based solution that provides protection for various cloud-based applications and services, including Microsoft® Office 365TM ExchangeTM Online, OneDrive® for Business, SharePoint® Online, Gmail, and Google Drive, was able to detect and block 12.7 million high-risk email threats. While the overall detections for malware dipped slightly in 2019, phishing and BEC saw significant leaps.

In 2019, email services remained prime targets for a variety of attacks, based on data from Trend Micro Cloud App Security. Cybercriminals expanded their social engineering techniques, with the FBI reporting that business email compromise (BEC) accounted for half of financial losses due to cybercrime. Credential-phishing attacks continued to rise and went for high-value accounts. The growing complexity and scale of these threats emphasize the need for multilayered security powered by machine learning and AI.
