Czech Cyber Security Center warns for targeted attacks on hospitals

The Czech National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NUKIB) has issued a warning against a cybersecurity threat in the form of an extensive campaign of cyberattacks on information and communication systems in the Czech Republic, and on the systems of healthcare facilities in particular.

This campaign could have severe impacts on the availability, confidentiality, and integrity of the information in important information and communication systems, NUKIB’s Director Karel Rehka said. The Agency has information that the threat could be carried out in the coming days, however there are also indications that the preparatory phase of the attacks is already in progress via a spear-phishing campaign.

The Agency assesses this threat level as High – the threat is probable to highly probable. The Agency refers to the Act on Cyber Security, where organizations are obliged to adopt safety measures and factor this warning into their risk management.

Healthcare providers targeted

While working around the clock to helping Corona patients, healthcare professionals in Europe and the US have been faced by cybercriminals that are seeking to exploit the crisis. A ransomware attack on a health-care provider locks down computers that typically contain electronic medical records, meaning that doctors and nurses can’t access information about their patients’ medical histories, the dosages of drugs that patients require and other critical information.

In addition to this, criminals are looking to attack and lock down organizations that are developing a vaccine and running clinical trials. Tonya Ugoretz from the FBI stated that they have certainly seen reconnaissance activity and some intrusions into some of those institutions, especially those that have publicly identified themselves as working on COVID-19 related research,”, in a recent webinar hosted by the Aspen Institute.
